Make the Most of Every Day

by ~ShiningSoulYoga~

Hearing about the devastating injury and subsequent passing of champion freestyle skier Sarah Burke has left me, along with countless people around the world, wondering how something so horrible can happen so suddenly and tragically to someone with so much potential and life in front of them. Maybe it is because she was the exact same age as I am, and my husband and I are both avid snowboarders, but her story really struck close to home. While it is unimaginable to think of what her husband, family and friends are going through at this time, the biggest lesson I am trying to take away from this is to live life to its fullest potential every single day.

So many people go through life just going through the motions. Wake up, go to work, drive home, have dinner, go to bed. Some days like that are just lovely, but most of the time you are just existing, without really savoring the moment you are in. It is not an easy task, but I think it is SO important to do something you enjoy every day, even if it is within your routine. If you are hanging out at home with your spouse, savor your time with them – trade stories about your day and about what you think your future holds. If you are out with friends, enjoy the freedom and company you are with. Making dinner- make something that will nourish your body and soul while leaving you completely satiated. If you can- do something out of the norm – go to a part of town you have never been to, or take your dogs to a park they have never explored before. Call a friend you haven’t spoken to in ages. If you give it enough thought, there are countless “new” things to do.

Grasp all the opportunities you can… don’t let hours and days slip by you in a fog. Be creative in your planning, and think outside of the box. Find new things to explore – maybe you will find a lifelong hobby or new favorite place to visit, or a new friend who will soon become a familiar face. Don’t put off doing what you want to do, and if you feel stuck in a dead-end job- do everything within your means to make steps towards a new career.

Travel, love, laugh, do crazy things that would raise some eyebrows, live, explore, discover and dream. You never know what later today or tomorrow or a month from now will bring, so live to your biggest potential in this moment, and never forget to appreciate all the gifts you have gotten along your ride.
